Ukraine Unrest sees gas & oil prices soar

Fears that the current Ukraine crisis could have a damaging effect on Europe’s main energy supply routes has prompted a sharp rise in the price of gas and oil supplies of up to 10%.

Russia currently supplies more than a quarter of Europe’s natural gas, half of which runs through Ukraine, while the mild winter has seen a reduced demand for heating fuels and an increase of fuel storage, countries like Germany (Russia’s Largest customer) will only be able to satisfy 60 days of demand if gas and oil routes are disrupted.

The last major shut down of Russian gas supplies in 2009, resulting from disagreement over contract prices and possible Ukrainian syphoning, saw parts of Europe shut down industrial plants and domestic heating systems with some Countries actively looking to reinstate old nuclear power plants.
